Dating App Safety in India: How to Spot Fake Profiles, AI Bots and Romance Scams
In this article
Online dating in India comes with a real risk that nobody likes to talk about: scams and fake profiles. McAfee's research published in February 2026 paints a clear picture (McAfee):
| Finding (India) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Have seen fake or AI-generated-looking profiles | 75% |
| Were asked to send money or share financial info by someone met online | 75% |
| Received a fake "exclusive" or "invite-only" dating app invite | 60% |
| Found they had been chatting with an AI bot or fake profile | 46% |
| Say they have been catfished | 33% |
| Lost money to a dating or romance scam | 1 in 7 |
| Average loss | ₹2,80,650 |
Younger people are hit hardest: about 1 in 3 people aged 25–34 and nearly 1 in 4 aged 18–24 reported losing some money. Here's how to protect yourself.
How to spot a fake dating profile
- Photos look too perfect. Model-like shots, studio lighting, or a slightly "plastic" AI look. Do a reverse image search on Google Lens if something feels off.
- Very little personal detail. Generic bio, no prompts, no clear city or work.
- They refuse video or voice calls. Always "camera broken" or "network issue".
- The story is dramatic. Working abroad, on a ship, in the army, recently widowed, in a crisis.
- They want to move off the app fast, usually to WhatsApp or Telegram, before you've built any trust.
- No verification badge on apps that offer one.
Red flags in the conversation
- Love bombing: "I've never felt this way" within days.
- Money comes up, in any form: a medical emergency, a customs fee, a "great investment", crypto trading tips.
- They ask for OTPs, QR scans, gift cards or UPI payments. No genuine match ever needs these.
- Pressure and urgency: "If you really cared, you'd help me today."
- Requests for private photos, which can be used for blackmail (sextortion).
- Inconsistent details: their age, city or job changes between messages.
- Fake "exclusive" app invites asking for payment or personal details to join.
If you see even one of these, slow down. If money is mentioned, stop.
Safety checklist before you meet
- Have at least one video call first.
- Check that their photos match the person on the call.
- Meet in a busy public place: a café, a mall, a popular restaurant.
- Arrange your own ride there and back.
- Tell a friend who you're meeting, where and when.
- Keep your phone charged and location sharing on with someone you trust.
- Don't share your home address, office details or financial information early on.
- Trust your gut. Leaving early is always allowed.
What to do if you've been scammed
- Stop all payments and contact immediately. Don't send "one last" amount to recover money.
- Call 1930, the national cyber crime helpline, or report at cybercrime.gov.in, as soon as possible.
- Inform your bank to try to block or reverse the transaction.
- Report the profile on the dating app and on any platform you chatted on.
- Save evidence: screenshots, usernames, phone numbers, transaction IDs.
- Talk to someone you trust. Scams are designed to cause shame. It's not your fault.
How InstaShadi is designed for safety
Safety isn't an add-on at InstaShadi; it's built into how matching works.
- Selfie verification: members copy a random pose in a selfie, and verified profiles get a blue tick.
- Nothing is shared until you both say yes. Your Instagram is revealed only through a mutual Insta Unlock, never one-sided.
- "I'll message first": choose to send the first message, so a match can only reply after you've said hi.
- One-tap reporting: reports block the person for you, and a profile reported by three people is hidden until reviewed.
- Date safety check-in: share when and where you're meeting with a friend on WhatsApp in one tap.
- A reminder in every chat: never send money or OTPs to anyone you met online.
FAQs
How do I know if a dating profile is fake?
Look for overly perfect photos, a vague bio, refusal to video call, dramatic stories and any mention of money. A reverse image search can reveal stolen photos.
Which dating app is safest in India?
Look for apps with photo or selfie verification, easy reporting and blocking, and controls over who can message you. Avoid any "exclusive" app that asks for payment through a link.
What should I do if someone asks me for money on a dating app?
Don't send it, stop replying, and report the profile. If you've already paid, call 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in and tell your bank immediately.
Is it safe to share my Instagram with a match?
Only once you trust them. On InstaShadi, Instagram handles are swapped only when both people choose to unlock, so you stay in control.
